1989 Honda Prelude. I have had the carburetor overhauled within the last 5,000 miles. I have also put a new distributor cap, new distributor, and a new timing belt put on it within the last 10k or 12k. It is having problems when it is idling acting like it is going to die, but when I do turn it off sometimes it's like it does not want to turn completely off. When driving, it drives like there is water in the gas or something, and there is black smoke coming out the tailpipe. I have had 6 mechanics look at it, 2 of which have put on the computer. They say that it is saying it is a map sensor, which really means it's a vacuum leak. The car cosmetically is in great condition, but with this vacuum leak, it is not running well.

The black smoke coming out of the tail pipe would indicate an engine running rich. A vacuum leak would cause an engine to run lean, thus no black smoke. Check the PCV valve as it may have failed. We also suspect a faulty carburetor even though you just had it overhauled based on the symptoms you described.

1965 Ford Mustang 289 mileage: 107000. The engine on my Mustang smokes bad and sometimes lacks power. I was told if it wasn't a blown head gasket to check the transmission modulator. If it leaks fluid, when the rubber line is removed that the diaphragm is bad and can cause this problem. I pulled the rubber line from the modulator and it did leak. Is this what is causing my engine to smoke and to lack power? Kevin

A pretty good chance it is. When the transmission modulator fails, it pulls the transmission fluid out of the transmission and burns it in the engine.
